Ancient Lonely Bristlecone: Dead Horse Overlook, Utah
It’s 3:30 AM on February 23rd, with the temperature a brisk 9°F on the night of a New Moon. I'm making my way to a remote corner of Utah, overlooking Dead Horse Basin, perched on the edge of a cliff. The sky is a breathtaking tapestry, with stars scattered across it like a million snowflakes suspended in the vastness of time and space.
Alone in the cold, I set up my tripod, my fingers stiff from the chill, and prepare to capture the timeless beauty of an ancient Bristlecone Pine—more than 1,000 years old and standing resiliently in solitude. As I finish, I take a moment for a selfie, gazing upward, contemplating the enormity of the universe and my place within it. With 125 billion galaxies in the observable cosmos, this snapshot feels like a small connection to something much larger.
